It's Over

I can't call this finished because it isn't.  There are too many things about it that disturb me.  However, it is over.  I'm tired of fiddling with it, so I'm moving on down the highway.  The question, of course, is which highway?  Yes, I know this was supposed to be the prelude to a watercolor.  The paper is sitting on my drawing table with tape around the edges as a sort of frame.  The tubes of paint are on the table, too, but not the brushes.  Hmmm - a Freudian slip in neglecting to get out the brushes?

I did do a quick pencil sketch on the paper .... and by quick, I mean I spent about 2 minutes on it.  Now in the past when I've done watercolors, I've spent a great deal of time on the sketches - both the value sketches as well as the finished sketch on the watercolor paper.  I think my approach to this one is indicative of how I feel about starting it.  OK, I'm getting entirely too self-analytical and I'm feeling a bit silly about it all.  So, without anymore comments, here's the colored pencil drawing.

Nancy,

It is lovely. I'm not surprised.

And is there something less arty about a colored pencil drawing? Is it not as worthy as a watercolor?

I'm pleased to see you doing art and posting again.

Please keep doing it - one foot in front of the other - you know,

xoxo

It's lovely :) What's wrong with just leaving it as pencil? Go for something different in watercolour... and just have FUN :)

Vicki has it right. Why is this less than a watercolor painting. If this medium works for you right now then use it! Your drawing came out beautiful to me. Put it somewhere where you can see it often and say to yourself "see, I CAN do it and I AM doing it" cause you are!

Thanks for dropping by my blog. Believe me, I know that dreaded feeling of starting a painting because I do sort of like this sketch and when I add paint the whole thing might be ruined! But the color is calling me and I'd love to come up with a portrait using the style Sharon teaches so I just have to do it. (I am going to scan the finished sketch though just in case!)

I like how the colored pencil drawing turn out. I would love to see it in watercolor, but completely understand.

Don't be so hard on yourself. As long as you are enjoying the process, that is all that matters.

Hum...I think your colored pencil drawing could be matted and framed and be finished as a "real" piece of art.

I know that if I take a lot of time on a "sketch" I can get tired of it after all is said and done and I don't want to do the "finished" painting. At that point it is time to do something else! It's great that you are doing art works! cheers, Stephanie (CED))

Color pencils annoy me, but you've done such a great job with them here!

Looks good Nancy....wish I had a garden.Keep sketching, it doesn't have to be finished...move on to the next one (or draw on the scruffiest piece of paper you can find-I always find that works for some reason)

I love it! I think it would make one awesome watercolor too! I hope you gather that chutzpah to give it a go!

It's lovely!

If they were watercolour pencils, you could just ad a bit of water and you'd have achieved both goals - a sketch and a watercolour! But I don't think this needs to be a watercolour.

It is beautiful as it is! Lots of depth and a lovely composition (both in your garden and on paper)!

Do you keep a gardening art journal, Nancy?

Maybe this lovely drawing was meant to be the final on this subject. Move on to another piece that may put you over the hump.

Looks wonderful to me! There is nothing wrong with doing a two-minute sketch for a painting. I do it all the time! Maybe you'll end up with something loose and free! If it doesn't turn out great, chuck it! Have fun! I think if I did a value sketch for everything I painted, I'd probably give up. Sometimes you just want to play!

Very well done, Nancy. You got a great feeling of depth in the sketch, and I really like the sweet little tree. I have been having a hard time getting back to art after having to take a break for awhile due to busyness, so I can relate to your struggles.

I agree with Debra it doesn't have to be finished, you can always come back to it. I've got loads of half finished stuff, I look at it as a learning experience.

It is a very nice sketch.
What next? This is the important thing (to me)the next one, pencil, watecolor... does not matter.
Happy drawing on your porch!

This is lovely. Colored pencil worked wonderfully for this scene.

Hello Nancy, First of all thanks very much for visiting and for your lovely comment. Secondly, I've just read your last few posts and see you are worried you'll be exposed any minute as a wannabee artist with no talent. Well there is absolutely no danger of that! This drawing is beautiful, and I love the little watercolour of the planter at your son's house too. Your art is lovely.
Janice.
