Watercolor sketch

Last night I sat on the porch with my sweetie and did a quick little watercolor sketch.  I did it in my old sketchbook that's almost filled up (I'm going to quit saying that because I'm planning on continuing to use it until it's all filled up ... which I hope will be soon!).  I used an old set of Pelikan pan watercolors that I've had for about 100 years.  Ok, so that's an exaggeration, but I've had it for at least 30 years!  Clearly I don't use it all that often, but each time I do I wonder why I don't use it all the time.

Sweetie got home really late last night - it was almost 7:00.  Since he usually leaves for work at 4:30 AM, getting home at 7 made for a long day.  I settled on the porch to wait for him with my painting things at the ready when our son, Andrew, called me.  We talked for over an hour about lots of interesting things.  I loved every minute of it!  It did, however, leave me a tad short of time for painting, hence the abbreviated little study.  I didn't do any sketching first, just dove right in with water brushes and the paint.  It was fun, even though the results are less than I would have liked.

PS ... due to our rapid fire internet speed, it took me longer to download this picture than it did to paint it.

Tell Michael to quit working so hard,

Nancy, this is a wonderful painting! Seems like more than a sketch to me. You did a great job. i especially love those little touches of red in the flowers to tie it all together. Oh, and i'm comforted to know that i'm not the only one who leaves art supplies for like 30 years without touching them. Giggle.
thank you for commenting on my blog... i'm sorry you lost your sister so quickly to cancer. oh my... that had to be devastating - only 15 days after diagnosis. We just never know - which is why we must really live for the day. Have a great weekend! xoxo

Hey, you had your priorities straight. Talking to your son is number one. The sketch captured the moment and that is what it's all about.

Lovely little study, Nancy. I love to paint without any pencil marks. It' s risky but exhilarating, especially when it turns out well. Please do more of these to show us.

This sketch give us the same sense of peacefulness of your post, thanks to its soft colours and to its carefully balanced tones. I've always preferred making a preparatory drawing before a watercolour, but this work shows that sometimes no drawing means more freshness!

Well, and now every time you look at this lovely sketch, you'll probably be reminded of the conversation with your son! One of the things I love most about looking back at old artwork, is the associations that pop up! And it's a very lovely painting. Pretty colors, and I think the term 'sketch' understates it also.
As usual, your post has such a nice positive feeling...I do so enjoy visiting!
